Location and landscape
Langenbrettach is located in the lower Brettach valley in the district of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg. The municipal area extends from about 171 metres above sea level on the Brettach in the north-west to around 339 metres at Birkenschlag near the border with Bretzfeld.
Viticulture
The mild climate is considered suitable for winegrowing. Langenbrettach has about 18 hectares of vineyard area. The documented vineyards are on steep, sun-exposed slopes, including the Hornberg area south of Brettach and the Himmelreich south-west of Langenbeutingen. Langenbrettach belongs to the winegrowing region Württemberg and is assigned to the Großlage Lindelberg.
Geology
In the Brettach valley, Upper Muschelkalk is exposed. In addition, parts of the Unterkeuper occur, partly covered by loess, and south of the Brettach there is Gipskeuper. Schilfsandstein forms the cap of the Sulmer Bergebene. Loess and deposits derived from loess cover larger parts of the Keuper landscapes around Langenbeutingen; the nearby Lindelberg is documented as a Keuper formation topped with Schilfsandstein.
History and wine tradition
Langenbrettach was formed on 1 January 1975 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Brettach and Langenbeutingen with the hamlet of Neudeck. In Langenbeutingen, arable farming, livestock breeding and winegrowing were important bases for earning a living until the 1960s. Documented special bottlings from the Himmelreich were made from Samtrot, or respectively from Spätburgunder; the Spätburgunder was available in dry and semi-dry versions.
