Location and landscape
Kindenheim is a wine-growing village in the northern Pfalz. The village lies between the elevations Kahlenberg and Gerstenberg, is surrounded by vineyards and offers views over the Rhine plain. A local vineyard circular route leads through the wine-growing landscape.
Altitude and climate
The vineyards are situated in exposed hilly country and, near Kindenheim, rise to around 250 metres above sea level. West winds and higher rainfall than in the classic Mittelhaardt ensure cooler conditions, which can delay budding and extend the ripening in autumn.
Soils and viticulture
In the Kindenheimer Steinlöcher, limestone was previously extracted underground. The Kindenheimer Burgweg features strongly lime-rich, heat-retaining soils and is protected by an old stone quarry. Riesling and Spätburgunder are documented for this site; dry Riesling is described as having a mineral character.
History and wines
Kindenheim was first mentioned in writing in the year 817. Wine-growing has been documented since around 1200; the local vineyard area covers around 180 hectares and is farmed by about 13 wine-growing businesses. In addition to white wines, red wines are also produced: white wines are matured in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, while red wines traditionally ferment on the mash.
