Winegrowing village on the Main
Homburg am Main is a winegrowing village on the Main and has belonged to Markt Triefenstein since the municipal reform of 1 May 1978. The place looks back on a history of more than 1,200 years and was previously the administrative centre of the Hochstift Würzburg.
Vineyard sites and viticulture
The vineyard sites Edelfrau and Kallmuth are closely linked with Homburg am Main. For the Homburg Kallmuth, viticulture has been documented for more than 900 years. The Edelfrau was laid out in 1963, at the time mostly by hand.
The Homburg Kallmuth
The Kallmuth has west to south-west-facing, steep to very steep slopes. The altitude ranges from about 140 to 240 metres, with a gradient of 40 to 80 per cent. Terraces with historic dry-stone walls shape the vineyard; larger sections can still be read only by hand.
Climate, soils and grape varieties
The Kallmuth has a sub-Mediterranean site climate. During the growing season, 280 to 350 millimetres of precipitation fall there; underground springs and water-bearing layers supply the vines. Geologically, the vineyard site lies at the transition from the Upper Buntsandstein to the Lower Muschelkalk. Documented are clay stones of the Röt formation and rendzina from weathered wave limestone. In the Kallmuth, Silvaner and Riesling grow; for the Edelfrau, Silvaner, Kerner, Weißer Burgunder and Spätburgunder are documented.
