Location and Classification
The Kallmuth is a vineyard site between Lengfurt and Homburg am Main in the municipality of Triefenstein, in the Main-Spessart district. The site belongs to the Franconian wine-growing region and is listed for Homburg am Main as well as Lengfurt in the Main wine-growing region.
Slope and Climate
The Kallmuth lies on a steep Main slope facing west to south-west, with a height difference of around 135 metres above the river. The massif includes the Homburg Heights at about 290 metres and the Kallmuth summit at about 279 metres above sea level. During the growing season, 280 to 350 millimetres of rainfall are documented; the classified site has a sub-Mediterranean site climate and a very high amount of summer heat accumulation.
Geology and Viticulture
The lower vineyard areas lie on red clay marl (Röt-Tonsteine) of the Upper Buntsandstein. The steeper upper slope consists mainly of Lower Muschelkalk, including Wellenkalk. At the Kallmuth, the transition from the Upper Buntsandstein to the Lower Muschelkalk is exposed, with the horizon of the boundary yellow limestone (Grenzgelbkalkstein). Viticulture takes place in the less steep lower areas.
Plots and Grape Varieties
The vineyard site comprises narrow, terraced plots, which are supported by dry stone walls. In the classified Kallmuth, Riesling and Silvaner are planted.
