Güntersleben

Location and Winegrowing

Güntersleben is a municipality in the Würzburg district in Bavaria and lies in the regional winegrowing area Franken. The municipality is situated on a high plateau between the Maintal in the west and the Gramschatzer Wald in the east. The Dürrbachtal valley and the surrounding slopes are defining features.

Güntersleben Sommerstuhl

The winegrowing covers around 17 hectares and focuses on the Günterslebener Sommerstuhl vineyard site west of the village on the road to Thüngersheim. The south-facing site at Eckberg has slope gradients of 10 to 30 percent and belongs to the Großlage Thüngersheimer Ravensburg. The soils consist of shell limestone; in part, a sandy-loam top layer is described.

Grape Varieties and Landscape

In the Sommerstuhl, among other varieties, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Silvaner, Kerner, Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer, Portugieser, Domina, Dornfelder and Regent are grown. A vineyard project is also dedicated to historical varieties such as Adelfränkisch, Franconian Pinot Burgundy, Schwarzurban, Blauem Arbst and Weißem Räuschling. The wines from the shell limestone layers are described as powerful and sustainable in the bouquet, as well as fruity, fresh and aromatic.

The cultural landscape includes hedges, dry grassland, dead wood, dry stone walls and adjacent forest areas. Dry stone walls in the vineyard were restored in 2023. In addition, alternative ground cover under the vines and measures for erosion protection are documented.

History of Winegrowing

Winegrowing in Güntersleben has been documented since the foundation of the parish in 1345. By around 1850, there were about 50 hectares of vineyard area. Later, phylloxera and other vine diseases caused substantial damage, resulting in winegrowing losing economic importance. The Güntersleben Winegrowing Association was founded on 11 July 1990.
