Location and landscape
Greußenheim is a municipality in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria and lies in the Franconian wine-growing region. The municipal centre is at an elevation of about 259 metres; the municipality covers around 17.7 square kilometres.
The surrounding area belongs to the hilly shell limestone landscape of the Remlingen highlands. Characteristic features include a varied relief, shallow valleys and elevations of about 250 to 310 metres. In geological terms, Greußenheim forms part of the West Franconian plates; a documented exposure shows layers of the Middle Muschelkalk.
Winegrowing in Greußenheim
Winegrowing in Greußenheim has been documented since 1270. The state Bavarian register of vineyard sites lists the Geisberg as a single vineyard site (Einzellage) in the Mittelmain area of the Franconian wine-growing region. An assignment to a Großlage does not exist.
According to a municipal depiction, historical winegrowing declined at the beginning of the 20th century as a result of climatic changes and the appearance of the vine louse. Under the vineyard register rules, a registered site name is used together with the name of the associated municipality or district; for quality wine or Prädikatswein, an official testing number is also required.
