Location and landscape
Frickenhausen am Main is located where the Main forms its southernmost bend, in the narrow valley landscape of the river. The municipality is surrounded by vineyards and belongs to the region Franken.
Vineyard sites and soils
The Frickenhäuser Kapellenberg is oriented to the south, lies at around 180 to 230 metres above sea level and has slope gradients of 20 to 60 per cent. The site is assigned to the Upper Muschelkalk; in the Kapellenberg vineyards there are Muschelkalk soils. The Frickenhäuser Fischer is characterised by slopes oriented from south to south-south-west, with a gradient of around 20 to 45 per cent, and by Muschelkalk soils.
Grape varieties and viticulture
The Frickenhäuser Fischer covers around 37 hectares. The most important documented grape varieties are Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Traminer. For the Frickenhäuser Kapellenberg, Silvaner, Weißburgunder and Mixed Lot are permitted. Silvaner is described as a representative wine of Frickenhausen. The local winemakers aim to improve quality through yield limitation and careful work in the vineyards.
History and vineyard designations
According to the municipality, the Babenbergers brought wine and viticulture to Frickenhausen in the ninth century. Historical wine presses show the earlier importance of winegrowing: the press in Frickenhausen was built in 1702, and that in Linsenhofen in 1501. In the official Bavarian vineyard directory, Fischer and Kapellenberg are listed as individual sites within the Großlage Frickenhäuser Markgraf Babenberg.
