Viticulture around Eisleben
Lutherstadt Eisleben is connected with a group of vineyards located outside the town in the region Saale-Unstrut. It lies about 30 kilometres north of the region’s most important viticulture area. The vineyards on the Süßer See run along steep slopes oriented towards the south and south-west.
Location and climate
The Unterrißdorf district has belonged to Lutherstadt Eisleben since 1 January 2006 and is situated around three kilometres east of the town near the Süßer See. The heat-storing capacity of the lakes favours viticulture in the Mansfelder viticulture area despite its northern location. In the wider Saale-Unstrut region, a continental climate prevails, with warm, dry summers and cold winters; winter and spring frosts are among the risks for viticulture.
History of viticulture
Viticulture on the Süßer See is documented for the year 1209. In the 16th century, the northern banks of the Süßer See, the Salziger See and the Bindersee between Eisleben and Langenbogen were terraced and planted with vines. In Unterrißdorf, the vineyards later returned to the slopes along the Süßer See; historically, viticulture in the Mansfelder area was mostly a sideline.
Single vineyard Himmelshöhe
The Seeburger Himmelshöhe is entered as a single vineyard in the vineyard register of Saxony-Anhalt. It belongs to the Mansfelder Seen area and to the Großlage Höhnstedter Kelterberg. As of 31 December 2024, the planted vineyard area covered 21,9862 hectares in the cadastral districts of Seeburg, Lüttchendorf and Unterrißdorf.
