Dorfprozelten

Location and landscape

Dorfprozelten is a municipality in the Miltenberg district in Bavaria. It is located on the River Main between the Spessart and the Odenwald and belongs to the wine-growing region Franconia. In terms of natural regions, the municipality lies in the Sandstone Spessart as well as in the Lower unit Main floodplain in the Buntsandstein.

Predigtstuhl vineyard site

The vineyards of the Predigtstuhl are on slopes above the Main valley. The local vineyard circular trail overcomes around 100 metres of altitude gain and offers views over the Main valley. Red Buntsandstein is named as the characteristic subsoil of the site.

Soils and grape varieties

In Dorfprozelten, predominantly podsolic brown earths occur; in addition, such soils are widespread from sandy to sandy-loam terrace deposits. At Predigtstuhl, among other grapes, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Frühburgunder (early Pinot Noir), St. Laurent, Domina, Dornfelder, Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus are grown.

History of viticulture

Wine-growing was an important part of the early economy of Dorfprozelten. Larger areas under vines are documented around 1350 in tax records of the Teutonic Order. The historic red wine “Prözler Rote” was associated with the sites Galgenrain, Rotenhäuser and Predigtstuhl. Preserved vineyard terraces and numerous vineyard walls continue to shape the slopes around Dorfprozelten.
