Location on the Middle Moselle
Burg (Mosel) is a municipality on the Middle Moselle near Traben-Trarbach in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The place lies on the Moselle and, as a wine-growing settlement of the Middle Moselle, forms part of the wine region Mosel.
Vineyards and soils
The vineyard landscape of Burg comprises steep, hillside plots above the town and along the Moselle valley. Weathered slate soils predominate. At Wendelstück slate, greywacke and iron-bearing reddish soils meet; Hahnenschrittchen is characterised by finely weathered slate.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Riesling is documented in the vineyard holdings of Burg. In addition, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Kerner, Dornfelder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are grown. For Hahnenschrittchen, fresh and lively Rieslings are described, while wines from Wendelstück are often made dry. The sheltered climate of the Middle Moselle favours late-ripening Riesling; during the day the slate slopes warm up and release the heat again at night.
Winegrowing and history
The vineyards of Burg belong to the Qualitätsweinbaugebiet Mosel (Mosel quality winegrowing region), area Bernkastel, Großlage Schwarzlay. The circular walking trail Falklay leads through the vineyards and over a steep ascent to the Sonnenköpfchen, with a view over the Moselle valley. The municipal history first mentions Burg in the year 842 and describes its development into an important winegrowing centre. A report on the village renewal traces the origin of the settlement back to a castellum mentioned in 928; the church is accordingly first mentioned in 1086.
