Wendelstück

Location and Classification

Wendelstück is a registered single vineyard in the municipality and cadastral district of Burg (Mosel) in the wine-growing region Mosel, in the Bernkastel area. The vineyard lies in the wine-growing area of Burg between Traben-Trarbach and Zell and is located near the Reiler Bridge.

Area and Topography

The vineyard, listed under the larger vineyard of Schwarzlay, carries the official vineyard number 410908. In the 2024 Rheinland-Pfalz vineyard register, a planted vineyard area of 9.0 hectares is indicated. Wendelstück is documented as a steep, sheltered hillside site.

Soils and Grape Varieties

The site features slate, greywacke formed from sandstone, and reddish soil. A high iron content gives the slate a grey-red colouring. The sheltered hillside climate is described as favourable for Riesling that ripens late. Riesling is the most important documented grape variety of the vineyard. Spätburgunder is planted at Weingut Paul Knod on around four percent of the grape-growing area available there in Wendelstück.

Wine Styles and Cultivation

Documented wines from Wendelstück are dry Riesling and dry Riesling Spätlese. For the vineyard work in Burg, including the Wendelstück plots of Weingut Kreuzgarten, a decision to refrain from fertilisation, mulching and natural ground cover is described.
