Falklay

Location and classification

Falklay is a single-vineyard site in Burg (Mosel) and belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, area Bernkastel and Großlage Schwarzlay. The official vineyard register assigns the site to the municipality and the cadastral district of Burg (Mosel). Falklay lies above the town.

Relief and soils

The vineyards encompass steep hillside and hill sites above Burg. In the steep slopes, finely weathered grey slate and very light slate soils can be found. In the hillside areas, heavier, loamy soils occur, bordering the Burger Schlossberg.

Climate and cultivation

The sheltered hillside sites of Burg are described as having a favourable microclimate. For the Falklay vineyards farmed by Weingut Kreuzgarten, a reduction in fertilisation, mulching and natural ground cover are documented.

Grape varieties and wine style

In Falklay, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Kerner and Saint Laurent are grown. The wines are described as fine, fruity and comparatively light; Rieslings from the steep-slope sites are considered delicate and playful. Falklay is listed in the official vineyard register under number 410904 and, in the harvest status list for 2024, shows 13.6 hectares of planted vineyard area.
