Location and classification
Hahnenschrittchen is a legally registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the municipality and cadastral district of Burg (Mosel). It belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, to the Bernkastel area and to the Großlage Schwarzlay. The vineyard lies between Burg and Reil above the Moselle.
Terrain and soils
The 14.0-hectare vineyard area is designated for the harvest year 2024. Hahnenschrittchen is documented as a steep slope vineyard and occupies a sun-exposed section on the middle hillside. The soils consist of slate, or of a slate-rich, finely weathered substrate. The slate can release again at night the solar warmth it has stored during the day.
Grape varieties and wines
The documented plantings include Riesling, Weißburgunder (White Burgundy), Kerner, Dornfelder, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Spätburgunder (Black Burgundy). From Hahnenschrittchen, Riesling wines are documented in dry and delicately off-dry styles; the Rieslings from one producer are described as fresh and lively.
