Aub

Location and landscape

Aub is located in the southern part of the Würzburg district in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, and belongs to the region Franken. The Gollach is the most important named body of water. The municipal area extends for about 5.2 kilometres from north to south. Overall, there are only small differences in elevation; however, at the southern edge the terrain drops steeply into the Gollach valley.

Geological subsoil

Under parts of the area there is Middle Muschelkalk with alternating layers of marl and claystone, as well as dolomite and dolomitic limestone. Near the surface, evaporitic residual rocks occur; at greater depths, gypsum, anhydrite and locally rock salt are found. The soils of the Aub map sheet developed from Muschelkalk substrates.

History and winegrowing

The settlement name Lemberheim is attested in a document from around 760 to 799 and is first linked to Aub from 1303. At the beginning of the 16th century, the name survived mainly as a field name; as a named place, the Lämmermühle near Aub was documented.

Historically, winegrowing was carried out above the Lämmermühle on a slope facing south. An attempt to revive it in the 1980s was unsuccessful; on the former vineyard terraces, there are now trees and meadows lie. Lämmerberg is entered in the Bavarian vineyard directory as an eligible vineyard name for Aub in the Maindreieck of the Franconian Qualitätsweinbaugebiet. The designation may be used only for Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein; at least 85 percent of the grapes must come from the specified geographical area, and in addition an official testing number is required.
