Its loose soils consist of shell limestone marl and fluvial sands and can store water.
History
Astheim was first mentioned in writing in 906. In 1409, Erkinger of Seinsheim founded the Carthusian monastery Marienbrück there. The church and priory were built in 1603, before secularisation dissolved the monastic community in 1803. The name of the wine site Karthäuser is derived from this former monastery.
Classification under wine law
The sites Karthäuser and Fürstenberg are assigned in the official Bavarian directory of vineyard sites to the Großlage Kirchberg in the area of the Volkach Mainschleife. For the 11.56-hectare Karthäuser classification area, the VDP site profile lists Weißburgunder as the classified grape variety.
