Location and Landscape
Armsheim is a municipality in the Rheinhessen hill country and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Wörrstadt in the Alzey-Worms district. The municipality is surrounded by vineyards, fields and meadows. The open landscape is crossed by streams, including the Wiesbachtal valley.
History
Armsheim was first mentioned in a document in the year 775. Earlier forms of the name are Aribimesheim, Armodesheim and Arbsheim. The present-day municipality was formed during the administrative reform of 1969 from the previously independent municipalities of Armsheim and Schimsheim. The former pilgrimage church Zum Heiligen Blut, built in the 15th century, is today the Protestant church in the town centre.
Vine Growing
In terms of wine growing, Armsheim belongs in the Rheinhessen winegrowing region to the Bingen area and the Großlage Adelberg. The officially designated single vineyards include Geiersberg, the Goldstückchen and the Leckerberg. The municipality is also located in the legally defined production area for wines with the protected designation of origin Rheinhessen.
Soils of the Vineyards
Geiersberg and Goldstückchen show marl-pararendzina soils with calcareous clays and sands, which were formed from tertiary marine deposits. For Leckerberg, marl-pararendzina soils from tertiary marine deposits are also recorded, as well as loess and colluvial soils from the deposition of humus-rich topsoils. The name Goldstückchen is documented in 1462 as “im goltale”, and Leckerberg in 1562 as “im Leckerberg”.
