Location and classification
The Geiersberg is a single vineyard site in the municipality of Armsheim in the Bingen area and within the Großlage Adelberg in Rheinhessen. The official wine site directory of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate lists it as a classified single vineyard site.
Topography and soils
The vineyards lie at about 120 to 230 metres above sea level and have exposures from south to west. The main soil type documented is marl-pararendzina with calcareous loams and sands, which are linked to deposits from the Tertiary sea. Another soil type is loess-pararendzina; the loess is described as calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages.
Historical names
For the year 1462, the vineyard is documented under the name off der giershalden and for 1592 as Geigersberg. The naming is explained by the historical use of the term Geier for birds of prey and their documented occurrence at the site.
