Location and landscape
Waldlaubersheim is a local municipality in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The village lies on the Nahe Wine Route and is surrounded by vineyards, fields and forests. To the north of the village is the Altenburg hill; on its north, south and east sides vineyards border it, while in the south-west there is a small area of woodland.
History
The first documentary mention of Waldlaubersheim dates from the year 767. It records the transfer of an already productive vineyard.
Viticulture and vineyard sites
The municipality’s vineyard sites are described as having slate soils. Proximity to the Rhine valley is also considered favourable for viticulture. The sites associated with Waldlaubersheim include Lieseberg and Otterberg; Altenburg is also designated as a wine-growing site of the village.
Special site conditions
The Altenburg is described as a windy site where the grapes dry quickly and fungal pressure remains lower. Cold nights in September and October and late ripening shape the site. The Domberg is a distinctive hill; its summit forms the highest point of the Domberg. The north-facing site lies at around 220 metres above sea level, features a cool mesoclimate and has slate and clay soils.
