Location and classification
Altenburg is a registered single vineyard site in Waldlaubersheim in the wine-growing region Nahe. The vineyards lie below and around the Altenburg hill, north of the municipality, and border its north, south and east sides.
Area and topography
The wine site directory of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate lists Altenburg with an area of 51.5 hectares. The south-facing site is at an altitude of around 250 metres.
Climate and soils
The site is described as windy and therefore dries out quickly. This reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Cold nights in September and October lead to late ripening; the main harvest takes place in October.
Slate and loam are given as soils. A further description names quartzite as the most important geological parent rock, supplemented by slate and loess, as well as dry, stony and shallow soils over rock.
Wine character
The cold autumn nights are associated with a pronounced expression of fruit in the wines originating from Altenburg.
