Location and landscape
Mühlhausen is a municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg and includes the localities of Mühlhausen, Rettigheim and Tairnbach. The municipality is located in the Kraichgau and covers an area of about 15.31 km². The landscape is shaped by gentle loess hills, incised valleys, steep Keuper slopes, terraces and hollow ways.
Climate and viticulture
Mühlhausen belongs to the wine-growing region Baden and to the wine-growing district of Kraichgau. This receives around 750 to 850 millimetres of rainfall every year and about 1,300 hours of sunshine during the growing season. Partly, the Odenwald and the northern Black Forest protect the region. The vineyards are characterised by loess; in steep sites, manual work is regularly required.
Vineyard sites
The Heiligenstein is documented in Mühlhausen and can be reached via the vineyard area on Dielheimer Straße. The Rosenberg is legally assigned to Dielheim and Tairnbach, while the Ölbaum is assigned to Malsch, Malschenberg and Rettigheim.
Grape varieties and wine styles
In Mühlhausen, among others, Spätburgunder, Lemberger, Dornfelder, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Schwarzriesling, Riesling and Trollinger are planted. In Kraichgau, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Müller-Thurgau and Auxerrois are also grown. The regional range of wines includes red wines, white wines, rosé and Weissherbst wines, as well as sparkling wines; the wines are described as having pronounced aroma, moderate fullness and an refreshing mineral character.
