Location and climate
Aschaffenburg is located in Bavaria in the administrative district of Lower Franconia in the region Franconia. The town stretches along the River Main at the transition between the Rhine-Main lowland and the western Spessart. The area is characterised by a mild continental climate between the Main valley and the Spessart.
Landscape and geology
The townscape combines the Main valley and areas lying lower with rising hills towards the Spessart. The wooded Godelsberg to the east of the town has former orchards and vineyard slopes. In the surrounding area, nutrient-poor Buntsandstein occurs on the Spessart heights and, in the fore-Spessart, crystalline rocks in places; the Main valley forms the western transition zone.
Winegrowing and history
Winegrowing played an important role in medieval Aschaffenburg. Today, only residual areas still exist below the Pompejanum, on the Stiftsberg or the Badberg, and on the Godelsberg. The vineyard sites Pompejaner, Badberg and Godelsberg are assigned to the Franconia winegrowing area and the Alzenau wine region, but to no major site.
On the Godelsberg, around 1839, Adam Kipp built the Kippenburg from field stones as a winegrowers’ house and viewpoint. From the middle of the 19th century onwards, vegetation protection measures and afforestation changed the appearance of the hill. The Pompejanum was created between 1840 and 1848 as an idealised reconstruction of a Roman residential building; the vineyard plantings belong to the historic garden complex.
