Site and terrain
Badberg is a historic vineyard site at Badberg/Stiftsberg in the urban area of Aschaffenburg. It lies below the Upper Town opposite the Hotel Wilder Mann. The vineyard is described as a terraced steep slope with a south-facing exposure. Sandstone shapes the material and the appearance of the site.
Historical development
A document from 1562 provides evidence of a vineyard at Badberg, which stretched from the Badberg gate outside the city wall in the direction of another vineyard. After the Second World War, the terraces and vineyards had become overgrown; the city cleared and restored them in 1972 and 1973. In the early 1990s, the Gemeinhardt family began the revitalisation of the vineyard site. In the late 1990s, it was included in the modern revival of viticulture in Aschaffenburg.
Cultivation
The vineyard is cultivated by the Gemeinhardt family. Before its revitalisation, the site was used for around 50 years to grow vegetables, herbs and fruit, which, according to a municipal document, were processed directly in the family’s catering business.
