Kastanienbusch GG 2021 Ökonomierat Rebholz

Der Kastanienbusch ist eine der bekanntesten Einzellagen an der Südlichen Weinstraße. Der Name leitet sich von den vielen Esskastanienbäumen ab, die in unmittelbarer Nähe wachsen und im milden Klima der Pfalz prächtig gedeihen. Nach Westen in Richtung Pfälzer Wald durch einen Höhenzug vor kalten Winden geschützt, liegt das traditionelle Kernstück des Kastanienbuschs in einem natürlichen Talkessel. Da es sich an dieser Stelle um eine der höchsten geologischen Hebungen des Pfälzer Waldes handelt, kommt hier ein Boden aus der Zeit des Perm, Rotliegendes genannt, zu Tage, der vor mehr als 280 Mio. Jahren entstand.

Location and classification

The Kastanienbusch is a VDP.GROSSE LAGE in Birkweiler in the Pfalz winegrowing region in Germany. The classification as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE is an assessment by the VDP and not a designation under German wine law.

Topography and climate

The vineyard lies in a wind-protected, bowl-shaped hollow at the foot of the Hohenberg. With a south-facing aspect, it is situated at an altitude of 160 to 320 metres and has steep sections with slope gradients of 10 to 35 percent.

The south-facing aspect enables high daytime temperatures, while the altitude provides cooler nights and a large diurnal temperature range. The VDP links these temperature differences to an early bud break and a long ripening period.

Soils and grape variety

The classified vineyard area covers 29.00 hectares. The subsoil is described as red slate (Rotliegend), weathered Bunter sandstone, limestone with deposits of marly limestone (Kalkmergeleinlagerungen) and some fine earth. The VDP describes the Rotliegend as a skeleton-rich, iron-bearing slate rock and states that the site profile includes Rotliegend sandstone. For the classified site, Riesling is specified.

The Kastanienbusch wines provided by Ökonomierat Rebholz are Rieslings as VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS and are made dry. This includes the Kastanienbusch GG.

About the winery

Winery in Siebeldingen

The Ökonomierat Rebholz winery is based in Siebeldingen in the wine-growing region Pfalz in Germany. The vineyard holdings cover around 26 hectares and are located at different elevations and on slopes at the edge of the Palatinate Forest.

Grape varieties and terroir

The most important grape varieties include Riesling, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay. Among other things, the vineyards have Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, Rotliegendes and loess clay. In the sunshine in Siebeldingen, the soil is characterised by Triassic Muschelkalk; the site, which is directly oriented to the south, lies at around 180 to 225 metres above sea level.

Organic and biodynamic cultivation

The winery has been farming its vineyards according to organic principles since 2005 and then continues biodynamically. Natural plant-strengthening agents are used for cultivation. The grapes are hand-harvested, often late in the season.

Winemaking and history

The winery’s style is for dry wines that have been fully fermented, with pronounced character of both grape variety and vintage. The natural wine philosophy rejects, among other things, acidification, fortification, fining, chaptalisation and artificial residual sweetness. According to the family, the Rebholz family has been active in Siebeldingen for at least 400 years; since 1991, the winery has belonged to the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates.
