Wölflein

Location and name

Wölflein is a named vineyard site in Veitshöchheim in Franken. It lies in the lower Sendelbachtal valley to the east of federal highway B27. The name goes back to the local field name Wölflein.

Weather data

Since 1968, weather data and the development of the vines have been recorded at Wölflein. Over the long term, the annual average temperature rose from about 9 to nearly 11 °C; for 1961 to 1990, 9.1 °C was given, and for 1991 to 2020, 10.0 °C. With Müller-Thurgau, vine development began in the period 1991 to 2020 by up to about two weeks earlier than in 1968 to 1990.

Research and grape varieties

The Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture uses the site for viticulture trials, including for varietal assessment and to reduce late frost risks. Documented there are Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Riesling, Bacchus, Merlot and Portugieser. Johanniter was also grown at Wölflein and read on 5 September 2018 at an average of 98 °Oechsle.

Wines and late frost trials

Dry Müller-Thurgau as a quality wine from certain specified growing areas is documented, as is Bacchus Kabinett as well as a semi-dry Rotling as a quality wine from certain specified growing areas. In trials with Müller-Thurgau, a double cut delayed the early vine development compared with the control in the years 2015 to 2017 by about 14 to 21 days. The site is also documented as being at risk from late frost.
