Single-vineyard site in the Bavarian Lake Constance area
The Weinhalde is an officially registered single-vineyard site in the Bavarian Lake Constance area within the protected wine-growing region Württemberg. It belongs to the Seegarten large district and comprises vineyard plots in the Ortsteile Hattnau and Hege, which belong to Wasserburg.
Climate and site
The Weinhalde lies in the pre-alpine maritime climate of Lake Constance at an altitude of about 400 metres. The lake moderates seasonal temperatures; in addition, foehn weather situations and an average temperature range of 13 to 15 °C are documented. The soils near the shore consist of gravel and sand, which are associated with deposits of end moraines.
Cultivation and grape varieties
On the area referred to as the Wasserburger Weinhalde, organic winegrowing with robust, fungus-resistant grape varieties is documented. The varieties planted there include Muscaris, Regent, Souvignier Gris, Johanniter, Spätburgunder, Solaris and Sauvignon Blanc. For a wine from the Wasserburger Weinhalde, hand harvest and grape selection are documented.
Wines and maturation
Under the name Wasserburger Weinhalde, dry white wines from Grauburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are documented, as well as a Spätburgunder. A Grauburgunder was fermented in a temperature-controlled stainless-steel tank and partly matured in used French barriques. Winegrowing on the area previously known as Winterberg was discontinued in 1942 and resumed again in 2012.
