Location and orientation
The Wanne is a vineyard site in Großheppach, a district of Weinstadt in the wine-growing region Württemberg. The site is considered relatively warm and faces south. It lies at about 110 to 140 metres above sea level; the Klingenberg sub-plot is oriented exactly to the south.
Soils and grape varieties
For the Wanne, weathered material that originated from Keuper, quartz sandstone, gypsum marl and Bunte marl are mentioned. Local producers link the site to the cultivation of red grape varieties. Documented grape varieties include, among others, Lemberger, Syrah, Trollinger, Spätburgunder, Samtrot, Shiraz, Merlot and Acolon.
Wine style and vinification
The wines from the Großheppacher Wanne are predominantly red wines. Dry wines made from Lemberger, Syrah, Shiraz and Trollinger are documented, as well as a semi-dry Trollinger. One producer cultivates their Wanne plots exclusively with Samtrot. The wines are designated as Qualitätswein, or Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete.
A Syrah from the Klingenberg sub-plot comes from very low yields, matures for 24 months in barriques and is bottled unfiltered. A Shiraz from the site matures in wooden barrels.
Historical evidence
The name Wanne appears as a field name on a historical cadastral map of Großheppach from the year 1832. In addition, it is listed in an official phylloxera survey from 1911 to 1912 as a designation for a vineyard plot.
