Location and Landscape
Vollburg is a named wine-growing site in Michelau im Steigerwald in the northern Steigerwald winegrowing region of Franconia. Producers also refer to it as Michelauer Vollburg and it lies on the Vollburg—or Vollberg—massif near the Eulenberg plateau.
Altitude and Soils
The Vollberg reaches about 456 metres above sea level and forms a higher-lying mountain plateau. The wine-growing site is characterised by steep terrain. The subsoil is described as Lettenkeuper as well as Keuper and clay-rich soils.
Climate and Grape Varieties
The site is influenced by the continental Franconian climate, which is described as temperate for the winegrowing region. For the Michelauer Vollburg, among others, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner and Bacchus are documented; in addition, Scheurebe, Domina, Riesling and Portugieser are associated with the site.
Cultivation and Wines
Because of the steep slope, the use of machinery is only possible to a limited extent, so a considerable part of the work is carried out by hand. Documented wines from Vollburg range from dry, fine, semi-dry or off-dry wines and Kabinett wines to rosé and dry red wines. A Portugieser was matured in barrique and bottled unfiltered; another producer ages, completes and bottles his wines traditionally in his own cellar.
