Ungeheuer

Site and Topography

Ungeheuer lies above Forst in the Pfalz. The vineyard site extends at an altitude of about 125 to 180 metres and rises towards the Haardt escarpment. It is oriented to the east to south-east and has slopes of up to 30 percent. Around 60 percent of the area slopes down towards the forest edge, while roughly 40 percent is flat.

Climate and Soils

The average hillside position is protected from west winds and is considered to be associated with earlier ripening, as well as a documented ripening advantage. The vineyards of Forst, including Ungeheuer, are described as particularly mild-climate. The soil is characterised by weathered red sandstone (Buntsandstein) with proportions of clay and limestone, limestone scree, and locally occurring volcanic basalt. The water retention capacity supports the supply of water and the vines’ access to mineral nutrients.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

Ungeheuer is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; as a classified grape variety, Riesling is designated. Riesling and Scheurebe are also grown in the site. The wines are associated with fine fruit, a mineral character and substantial fullness.

Area and History

The classified area covers 35.00 hectares. For the vineyard site, around 29 hectares or 29.15 hectares are given at municipal level. Ungeheuer was assessed as a top site in the Bavarian soil classification of 1828. According to municipal tradition, the name goes back to the term “Ungehuwer” from 1460; the designation “Forster Ungeheuer” traces back to Johann Adam Ungeheuer, a town clerk in Deidesheim, in 1699. A remark attributed to Otto von Bismarck is also associated with the wines.
