Location and Geography
Stiege is documented as the Haltinger Stiege in Haltingen, a district of Weil am Rhein in Baden. The vineyard site is located in a small hollow on the Tüllinger at around 320 metres above sea level and has a slope of 10 to 20 percent. Its south-west to west orientation is considered climatically favourable. The area belongs to the southern and warm wine-growing regions of Germany.
Soils and Grape Varieties
The soils consist of loess and calcareous marl respectively of loess and calcareous weathered soils. The Haltinger Stiege, which covers around 32 hectares, is the largest and central site of the Haltinger winegrowers. The vines planted are Gutedel, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Blauer Spätburgunder. Gutedel is documented especially for the flatter and cooler parcels of the site.
Wines and Maturation
Dry Gutedel and Spätburgunder wines are produced from the Haltinger Stiege. Documented bottlings are designated as Deutscher Qualitätswein from Baden-Markgräflerland; a Gutedel from the winery am Schlipf is classified as a single-site wine (Lagenwein). For the Gutedel and Spätburgunder of the Haltinger winegrowers, hand harvesting is documented. The maturation includes temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing in stainless steel, a traditional two-week maceration period for the Spätburgunder, as well as spontaneous fermentation and maturation in wooden barrels for a Gutedel from the winery am Schlipf.
Historical Reference
The Haltingen winegrowing cooperative was founded on 5 October 1936. A historical record from 1986 listed the Haltinger Stiege as a known site of about 32.8 hectares, with predominantly Gutedel plantings.
