Geographical classification
Stiefel is a registered vineyard site near Tiefenstockheim, a district of Seinsheim in the Kitzingen district in Bavaria. The site belongs to the wine-growing region Franconia and is not assigned to any of Germany’s large-scale winegrowing regions, meaning it is not allocated to a German Großlage.
Site and soils
A historical description lists Stiefel as a vineyard site facing south-east with a slope of around 35 to 40 percent. The soils in the area around Tiefenstockheim are based on Muschelkalk. There, a fossil-bearing Muschelkalk oyster reef is also exposed.
Vines and history
For Stiefel, Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner were recorded as the most important grape varieties. The area was described in 1993 as around 1.5 hectares; today, the remaining vineyard consists of two small plots. Since the 1970s, the wine has been marketed under the name Tiefenstockheimer Stiefel, which goes back to the shape of the vineyard that is attributed to a stiefel (boot).
Historical context
Tiefenstockheim lies in the Maingau climatic zone, which is described as one of Germany’s warmer wine-growing climate zones. Existing cellars and the vine in the coat of arms of the district are considered indications of the town’s former wine-growing history.
