Steinler

Location and Geography

Steinler is the Nacken monopole site in Nack, a district of Lottstetten. Parts of the site are steep and face south. Mixed and beechwood forests in the north and west provide protection.

Climate and Soils

The mild climate is influenced by the Rhine and Lake Constance. The soils consist of sandy loam from moraine deposits with material containing gravel, and they have good heat-retention capacity.

History and Cultivation

The name Steinler refers to a family-run vineyard in Nack. The guesthouse host family Rieger had already cultivated Spätburgunder there more than 200 years ago; historically, the wine was prepared in the cellars of the Gasthof zum Kranz. The Clauß family began converting grassland in Nack into vineyards at the beginning of the 1980s. Since 2005, the family-run Steinler wine has been produced exclusively by the Weingut Clauß for the Gasthof zum Kranz. Cultivation is carried out according to site care described as nature-oriented.

Grape Varieties and Vinification

Documented Steinler wines are made from Spätburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Muskateller and Sauvignon Blanc. The range includes dry red wines as well as rosé and white wines, which the producer describes as fruity and delicate. The Steinler Weißburgunder matures mostly in stainless steel, with 10 to 15 percent in tonneau. The Sauvignon Blanc Grande Réserve is aged for longer on fine lees and in tonneau. The Steinler Rosé Magnum is picked early, fermented after whole-cluster pressing in a wooden cask, stored on fine lees until April, and bottled after a single filtration.
