Location and classification
The Freiburger Steinler is a single vineyard in Freiburg im Breisgau, more precisely in Freiburg-St. Georgen. The vineyards lie at the foot of the Schönberg and on its western slope. As the northernmost single vineyard in the Markgräflerland, the Steinler belongs to the Baden wine-growing region Baden.
Soils and cultivation
Yellow bunter sandstone and marl, as well as loess and clay soils, are described for the Freiburger-Steinler vineyards. The name Steinler is also associated with a stony subsoil made of weathered granite. Cultivation includes permanent ground cover, the avoidance of herbicides and insecticides, and reduced crop protection measures. The grapes are picked by hand.
Grape varieties and wines
For the Freiburger Steinler, Gutedel, Red Gutedel, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented; Muscateller and Gutedel are also mentioned. The documented wine styles include dry Kabinett wines and quality wines, as well as a sweet Gutedel Auslese.
Historical notes
A document from 1298 mentions in the Uffhausen district a vineyard site designated “der steinler”, which was associated with the Tennenbach monastery. The St. Georgen winegrowing cooperative was founded in 1954. From 1957 to 1959, the vineyards were cleared and replanted; in the process, 2,550 plots were merged into 638.
