Location and classification
Steinfelsen is a legally designated single vineyard in the wine-growing area Kaiserstuhl of the Baden winegrowing region. It belongs to the Großlage Vulkanfelsen; as registered municipalities, Bickensohl and Ihringen are listed. The site is connected with Bickensohl, a district of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl.
Terroir and climate
Steinfelsen is described as a terraced vineyard. The subsoil consists of loess over volcanic rock, or volcanic rock with loess soil. The terraces receive long-lasting evening sun and have cool nights.
Cultivation
For the sites Steinfelsen and Herrenstück, yield reduction and hand-harvesting are documented. For a Grauburgunder selection, organic fertilisation, multiple yield regulations after flowering and during ripening, a target yield of 60 kilograms per acre, and selective hand-harvesting are mentioned. The vines are up to 40 years old and are planted in small plots.
Wines
Under the name Steinfelsen, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Chardonnay and Ruländer are documented. The range includes dry white wines, dry Pinot Noir and delicately sweet Pinot Noir Rosé; designated quality categories are Qualitätswein, Kabinett and Spätlese. The wines are described as having a mineral character, aromatic diversity, and a balance of fruit, acidity and structure. For a Grauburgunder selection, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation, and ageing on lees for up to twelve months, as well as maturation in Badenese single casks and in stainless-steel tanks are stated.
