Location and classification
Steinbuck is the single-vineyard Bischoffinger Steinbuck, located south-west of Bischoffingen in Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl. It belongs to the Kaiserstuhl in the winegrowing region Baden. The name Steinbuck means stony hill.
Climate and terrain
The site is considered to be very warm. Its basin location and the southern exposure promote heat retention, while the rocky ridge ensures air movement. A documented plot lies in the upper part of a rounded rocky ridge with a basin below; the south-facing slope is about ten percent.
Soil and viticulture
The soil is heavy and rich in clay and contains weathered volcanic rock. Further descriptions mention volcanic soil with a high proportion of clay, as well as loess mixed with volcanic material. A documented plot has black soil and a high pH value caused by volcanic material. The water-holding capacity of the Pinot Noir plot is comparatively low; particularly on the rocky ridge, dry-stress can occur. Humus and crushed grape pomace are applied there regularly.
Grape varieties and wine style
Grauburgunder is documented as the most important grape variety of the site and is described as suitable for demanding wines. A dry Grauburgunder from the single-vineyard matures in barrique. Also Pinot Noir, or Frühburgunder, is evidenced from Steinbuck. A corresponding plot was planted in the year 2000 with the Pinot Noir clone 777 on SO4 rootstock. The Pinot Noir documented as coming from this is matured as a dry red wine, with a four-week maceration, followed by ageing in new 225-litre barriques for twelve to 18 months, depending on the vintage.
