Location and classification
Steinberg is a single vineyard in the district of Partenheim in the Bingen area and belongs to the Großlage Abtey in Rheinhessen. The vineyards lie on a hilly slope near Partenheim. On the slope towards the Stadecker Warte there is the Himmelbergshäuschen.
Soils and water balance
Documented are calcareous marl clay with the soil classification Pelosol, as well as the Rendzina formed from limestone. The marl dates back to calcareous clayey deposits of the Tertiary Sea, while the limestone soil is described as a tertiary deposit of a calcareous algae reef. The deep, calcareous Pelosol is rich in clay that can form springs and shows limited permeability to water and aeration. The shallow to medium-deep Rendzina is very rich in lime, stony and sandy-loamy, and is well aerated and warms up easily. Clay and marl store water and ensure comparatively little drought stress for the vines.
Area and Riesling
The Rhineland-Palatinate wine-growing sites directory lists Steinberg under number 710114 with 116.4 hectares of planted vineyard area in Partenheim. Riesling is grown in Steinberg. The documented dry Riesling Riesling S Partenheim Am Himmelberg is made from hand-selected grapes and shows notes of citrus and peach, fruity character, as well as a lively, harmonious acidity.
Cultivation and vinification
For the Partenheim vineyards, including the Steinberg plots, intensive manual work, reduced yields and manual grape selection are stated. No herbicides are used in the vineyards; a recycling spray device is intended to reduce the consumption of crop-spraying agents. The Riesling S is produced using modern processing technology.
