Steinberg

Location and soils

The Steinberg is a vineyard site in Bollschweil in the Baden wine region in southern Germany. Local producers refer to the site as the Bollschweiler Steinberg. The slopes face south-east and are located on a Jurassic limestone formation. The vines take root in solid limestone, which is covered by around 50 centimetres of soil.

Grape varieties and wine style

In plots of the Steinberg, Gutedel, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Johanniter are grown. The wines documented from the site also include Muscaris, a dry rosé, as well as fine and dry versions of individual varieties. In particular, Riesling is associated with pronounced acidity and a mineral character; the Steinberg wines are described as finely structured and mineral.

Viticulture and maturation

The Mangold winery cultivates its Steinberg vineyards conventionally, but uses chemical plant protection only to a limited extent. Fertilisation is carried out exclusively with organic means, with ground care using sown cover crops and hand harvesting. The wines are processed gently. Selected premium wines are made from reduced yields and selected grapes and mature in oak barrels.

Wine-growing history

The Mangold family has documented wine-growing in the Bollschweiler Steinberg over several generations. After the founding of the Ehrenstetten winegrowers’ cooperative, the family’s grapes were delivered there before the winery produced its own wines. From Bollschweiler wine production come a Riesling Sekt brut produced for the first time with the 2007 vintage, and a dry Pinot Rosé produced for the first time in 2012.
