Location and landscape
The Stahlberg, also known as Uissigheimer Stahlberg, lies near Uissigheim, a district of Külsheim in Franconia. The vineyard extends over the southern, western and eastern slopes of the cone-shaped Stahlberg; the north slope is wooded.
Geology and elevation
The Stahlberg is a witness hill with an elevation of around 377 to 378 metres above sea level. Its summit consists of Lower Muschelkalk and rises above the landscape of the Upper Buntsandstein. The vineyard soils are described as weathering products of Muschelkalk and Buntsandstein.
Viticulture
Around 10 hectares are farmed on the Stahlberg. The south-facing slopes are used for viticulture and, in the corresponding description of the landscape, are regarded as the only south-facing vineyard sites in this area. Müller-Thurgau and Kerner are recorded as grape varieties; in addition, Regent is grown on the Stahlberg by Weingut Bergauer.
Wine and history
Wines from the Uissigheimer Stahlberg are bottled by local producers in a Bocksbeutel. For wines from its Stahlberg vineyard sites, Weingut Bergauer has documented its own vinification since 2006 without fortification and without the addition of sweet reserve; red wines undergo a must fermentation.
Historical viticulture
Viticulture in the Uissigheim area, including the Stahlberg site, is documented for the year 1711. At that time, a large part of the municipality was planted with vines.
