Location and soils
Spitzenberg is documented as a vineyard site in the municipality of Wiesloch in the wine-growing region of Baden and in the Kraichgau. For the Wiesloch vineyard sites Spitzenberg and Bergwäldle, weathered soils formed from Keuper with a high proportion of clay are stated.
History
A record from 1684 mentions wine tithes from the Gewann Spitzenberg in Wiesloch, which were assigned to the Kurpfalz. At the beginning of the 19th century, Wiesloch viticulture comprised about 300 Morgen; Spitzenberg belonged to the aforementioned vineyard sites. For the 1929 vintage, Spitzenberg Riesling was described as the best Wiesloch wine of that vintage with 95 degrees Oechsle.
Grape varieties
Historical records name Elbling, Quadler and Römer as grape varieties that were cultivated at Spitzenberg before 1812. In wines with the designation Wieslocher Spitzenberg, Riesling, Scheurebe, Grauburgunder and Chardonnay are also documented.
Wine styles
Documented are a semi-dry Riesling Kabinett as well as noble sweet Riesling Auslese and Scheurebe Ice Wine styles. A Wieslocher Spitzenberg Scheurebe Ice Wine is documented as a German Prädikatswein Eiswein from Baden; a Riesling is documented as a German Prädikatswein Auslese. A Chardonnay designated Wieslocher Spitzenberg was matured in wooden casks.
