Location and orientation
Sonnhalde is a named wine-growing site in Müllheim in the Markgräflerland region in Baden. The site, which is oriented to the southwest, borders the Pfaffenstück and lies in the mild climate of the Markgräflerland.
Soils and grape varieties
In the southern part, Sonnhalde is characterised by loess soils, and in the western part by heavy clay soils. For the Müllheim Sonnhalde, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented. A planting of old Spätburgunder vines dates from 1963.
Wine styles
Sonnhalde Grauburgunder is produced as Kabinett and Spätlese. The wines from the loess soils combine elegance with expressions of fruit, while those from the clay soils are associated with longer ageing, depth and extract. A Spätburgunder from old vines is described as fruit-forward and with soft tannin.
Maturation and designation
A documented Müllheim Sonnhalde Spätlese is matured in a large wooden cask and is described as rich in extract and bouquet. In an official designation notification from 2023, plot 7898 was assigned to the single site Sonnhalde and the grand cru Burg Neuenfels.
