History of viticulture
For Krautheim, viticulture is documented as far back as the Middle Ages. At that time, the church in Volkach held wine tithe rights, while local landowners had vineyards. In the 19th century, the area under vines declined; in 1887, more than 30 hectolitres of wine were demonstrably exported via the Volkacher market. In the 1970s, wine-growing was revived.
