Sonnenhalden

Location and wine-growing region

The Sonnenhalden wine-growing site comprises vineyards in Tübingen, Hirschau and Unterjesingen and belongs to the wine-growing region of Württemberg. Tübinger Sonnenhalden lies on the eastern edge of the Spitzberg natural area, with views over the Neckar valley.

Topography and climate

A documented vineyard is located on a terraced slope, oriented to the south, in a sheltered position. Tübinger Sonnenhalden, at the western end of the Neckar valley, is among the warmest and steepest wine-growing sites. The climate is milder than in the Filder region and in parts of Upper Swabia, the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest, while at the same time cooler and harsher than at the lower sites along the Neckar. Tübingen is therefore considered the boundary zone of viticulture.

Parcels and wines

Wine-growing in the surrounding area is characterised by small parcels as well as numerous part-time and hobby winemakers. A documented holding within Tübinger Sonnenhalden comprises about five ares of Rebfläche. For the 2018 vintage, a Rosé made from Pinot Meunier is stated as a German Qualitätswein with 13% by volume.

Historical designation

Before the German wine law of 1971, the individual vineyard sites were indicated on the labels. After that, wines from Tübingen, Hirschau and Unterjesingen were marketed as Tübinger Sonnenhalden. Historical records also provide evidence of a winery building in the Sonnenhalde where the grapes from the local vineyards were processed.
