Sonnenbrunnen

Location and landscape

The Sonnenbrunnen is documented as a vineyard site “Tüllinger Sonnenbrunnen” in Lörrach-Tüllingen on the Tüllinger Berg in the Markgräflerland region of Baden. The site above Tüllingen and the climate of the Upper Rhine historically favoured viticulture on the Tüllinger Berg.

Geological context

The Tüllinger Berg consists of a molasse core, which is overlaid by limestone benches and marl layers. The Sonnenbrunnen spring is linked to the geological transition between a limestone bench and marl that impedes water.

Cultivation and grape varieties

The site is farmed within a group of vineyards on the Tüllinger Berg by producers using environmentally conscious and quality-oriented methods. For organically grown grapes, hand-harvesting, separate grape reception and separate cellar preparation are documented. The grape varieties in this group include Gutedel, Spätburgunder and Weißburgunder.

Wines and history

Under the name Tüllinger Sonnenbrunnen, wines made from Gutedel, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented. These include dry Gutedel and dry Spätburgunder Weißherbst. Historical records from 1560 to 1605 mention vineyard parcels in the area “Sonnenbrunnen or Röhrenbrünnlein”. The spring supplied households in Altweil up until the end of the 1960s.
