Location and vineyards
Lörrach belongs to the Baden region. The vineyard Sonnenbrunnen is located in Tüllingen, a district of Lörrach on the Tüllinger Berg. The wine-growing landscape of the Tüllinger Berg covers around 90 hectares of vine area, distributed across several named sites.
Soils and climate
The Lörrach vineyards on the Tüllinger Berg lie on its south-eastern slopes. They are considered cooler sites where the grapes ripen later than in the warmer parts of the Tüllinger. The soils are described as loam marl and limestone; in the subsoil there are limestone banks.
Sonnenbrunnen
For the site Tüllinger Sonnenbrunnen, within the current vineyard areas, around 1.5 hectares are given for the Haltinger winemakers. Wines from the Tüllinger Sonnenbrunnen and the hamlet of Schlipf are completely fermented, without fortification or sweet reserve, and are developed according to their vintage character. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested and treated gently in the cellar; afterwards, the wines mature for six to twelve months on fine lees.
Historical reference
Tüllingen is documented in writing for the first time in 1173 and was incorporated into the city of Lörrach in 1935. A register from the years 1772 to 1786 documents partial and tithe wines for Tüllingen and provides evidence of the town’s historical wine levies.
