Sonnenberg

Location and classification

Sonnenberg is an officially recognised single-vineyard site in Unkel on the Middle Rhine. The vineyard site extends across the cadastral areas of Heister and Unkel and lies on the Rhine-facing side of the Stuxberg. In the official vineyard directory 2024, it is assigned under site number 320116 to the Loreley area and the Großlage Burg Hammerstein.

Climate and soils

The site is located close to the Rhine and is protected from wind by the Elsberg, creating a local microclimate. The winegrowing region around Unkel is characterised by a mild climate, comparatively infrequent frost, plenty of sunshine and moderate rainfall. Sonnenberg covers steep, terraced slopes with soils formed from slate weathering and slate rock; on the Stuxberg, sandstone outcrops of the Siegen layers also emerge.

Terraces and cultivation

The historic terraces and dry stone walls have been preserved, as no land consolidation took place. Since 2015, new cross-terraces have been created on previously fallow plots; the first wine from this new planting was harvested in 2017. The terraces improve heat storage, exposure to the sun and ventilation, make mechanical cultivation possible and support long-term groundcover to protect against soil erosion. The official register lists 1.7 hectares of planted vineyard area in Heister and 3.1 hectares in Unkel.

Grape varieties and wines

For Unkel’s Sonnenberg, among others Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Blauer Portugieser, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Scheurebe, Blauer Frühburgunder and Regent are documented. A designated Weißburgunder from the site is vinified dry, described as fruity and aromatic with notes of pear and lemon peel, and matured in small French barriques. Sonnenberg was also one of the vineyard sites that were still cultivated in Unkel in 1944.
