Unkel

Location on the Middle Rhine

Unkel lies on the lower Middle Rhine in the district of Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, on the right bank of the Rhine. The vineyards are located on steep slopes facing south to south-west.

Sonnenberg and Terroir

The single vineyard site Sonnenberg is situated on the Rhine side of the Stuxberg and comprises areas at Elsberg and Stux. Elsberg shelters the site from wind, while the distinctive rock formation Stux lies above. The subsoil is characterised by shale-bearing soils; on the Stuxberg, prominent sandstone layers and rock faces stand out in the Siegenschichten. The local microclimate is considered mild and balanced, with moderate rainfall and a comparatively low frequency of frost.

Viticulture and History

Historic vineyard terraces and dry-stone walls shape the steep slopes around Unkel and Scheuren. Viticulture has been documented in Unkel for more than 1,100 years; the place was first mentioned in 886 in connection with the transfer of vineyards. Up until the second half of the 19th century, viticulture was an important economic foundation. Phylloxera, mildew, industrialisation and improved transport routes subsequently led to a significant decline. Today, among other things, the Querterrassen at Elsberg are used, with the rows of vines running across the slope.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

Riesling is one of the important grape varieties of the Middle Rhine and is also grown in Unkel. Other documented varieties are Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Blauer Portugieser, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Johanniter, Souvignier Gris and Roter Riesling. A dry Sonnenberg Riesling is described as having apple fruit, strength and a touch of slate spice. A dry Sonnenberg Weißburgunder shows fruity and aromatic notes of pear and lemon zest and is matured in small French barriques.
