Sonnenberg

Location and classification

Sonnenberg is an officially designated single-vineyard site in the Baden wine-growing region, in the Kraichgau area. The site extends across the Eichtersheim and Michelfeld districts in Angelbachtal, as well as Eschelbach in Sinsheim, and belongs to the wine-growing region Baden.

Relief and soils

In Eichtersheim, Sonnenberg is described as a steep Keuper slope that stretches close to the valley floor of the Waldangelbach. On the valley slopes, Gipskeuper is found, while the hilltops are characterised by Schilfsandstein. In the Eschelbach section of the vineyard register area there are two adjacent, steep parcels with an unfavourable or low soil potential; together they cover at most 8.46 hectares. They are dedicated to viticulture and are characterised by small-scale ownership structures as well as numerous biotope areas.

Viticulture and wines

Weingut Gmelin documents Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) from a Sonnenberg plot in the Eichtersheim district. Manual work in the vineyard, yield reduction, cultivation of the soil, selection and hand-harvesting are carried out there. A wine from the 2017 vintage with the designation Eschelbach Sonnenberg Grauburgunder is listed as a dry white wine and was partially matured in barrique as well as in a stainless-steel tank.
