Sonnenberg

Location and Landscape

The Sonnenberg is documented as the Opfinger Sonnenberg in Opfingen, a district of Freiburg im Breisgau. The single vineyard site is located in the Tuniberg wine-growing landscape in Baden, a gentle rise between the Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest, west of Freiburg.

Soils and Climate

The Tuniberg is formed by a Jura limestone sandstone subsoil with a thick loess layer. For the Opfinger Sonnenberg, a deep loess soil is described. The site is considered climatically favourable for viticulture; the rest of the Tuniberg is protected by the Black Forest and the Vosges.

Grape Varieties and Wines

The vineyard areas are planted predominantly with Burgundian varieties. Documented wines from the site include, among others, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Chardonnay as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Ruländer and Rivaner Muscateller. Both dry and non-dry white wines, red wines, rosé and Weißherbst are represented, along with wines of the Prädikat categories Kabinett, Spätlese, Beerenauslese and Eiswein.

Vinification

A documented Weißburgunder from the Opfinger Sonnenberg was prepared with time on the skins, developed in 500-litre wooden barrels, and then stored on fine lees. For this wine, an intended yield of 60 kilograms per acre was specified through green harvesting.
