Silberberg

Location and landscape

The Silberberg is an officially documented single vineyard in Bahlingen in Baden. The warm local climatic conditions support the ripening of the grapes. Terraced plots and loess hollow ways form part of the vineyard landscape.

Soils and cultivation

The documented soils consist of heat-storing volcanic rock with a deep layer of loess. Several producers farm land in the single vineyard; one documented winery has nine hectares there. For individual plots, the traditional field names Fohberg, Käsenthal and Hundsrück are used. Cultivation includes maintaining the natural terraces and loess hollow ways, as well as environmentally oriented viticulture.

Grape varieties and wines

In the Bahlinger Silberberg, among other varieties, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Müller-Thurgau are documented. A winery with plots in the site also produces Gewürztraminer, Muskateller and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines include dry and semi-dry white wines, rosé or Weißherbst, as well as red wines. The designation Bahlingen Silberberg appears on Qualitätswein and QbA labels; in addition, a Weißburgunder bears the Prädikat Spätlese.

Historical reference

The winegrowing cooperative named after the Silberberg was founded in 1935. Its most recent harvest processed independently dates from 1968; from 1969 onwards, deliveries began to the Badischen Winzerkeller. In 2011, it joined the Ersten Markgräfler Winzergenossenschaft Schliengen-Müllheim. The associated cooperative also describes an EcoVin line with resource-saving handling and gentle cellar work.
