Schmecker

Location and historical designation

Schmecker is a named vineyard site, a Gewann, in the cadastral area of Weikersheim. The name is already recorded in the historical cadastral map inventory from 1833. The mapped vineyard area lies near the Wartturm and the SV Weikersheim.

Soil and landscape

The vineyard site belongs to the historical shell limestone (Muschelkalk) vineyard landscapes and offers views over the Vorbach and the Tauber valleys. The municipality of Weikersheim lists shell limestone as the soil of Schmecker. A historical survey of viticulture additionally describes heavy clay and fertilisation with farmyard manure.

Grape varieties and wine styles

In the historical survey, a mixed planting of Sylvaner and Gutedel (Chasselas) is documented. For wines designated as Schmecker, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Traminer, Blanc de Noir, Tauberschwarz, Acolon, Zweigelt, Spätburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc and Samtrot are also recorded. Public wine lists include dry, off-dry and delicately sweet expressions, including dry Tauberschwarz, off-dry Müller-Thurgau and delicately sweet Traminer.

Historical significance

A description of the Oberamt Mergentheim from 1880 includes the Schmecker wine among the more sought-after Tauber wines; a large part was sold outside the area. It is also mentioned as one of the established vineyard areas of the early 18th century in a historical depiction of the princely vineyards of Weikersheim.
