Location and classification
The Schlosssteige is a documented single vineyard of 43 hectares in the wine-growing region Württemberg. It is connected with Beuren, Frickenhausen, Metzingen, Neuffen and Weilheim an der Teck.
Wine-legislation classification
Schlosssteige is classified as a single vineyard within the larger classified area of Hohenneuffen in the Remstal-Stuttgart area of the Württemberg Quality Wine Region.
Relief and soils
The vineyards lie on the slopes at the foot of Hohenneuffen. The higher sections are partly closer to the geological formation Weißjura. In the areas of Neuffen and Beuren, Dentalienmergel from the Bathonian formation of the Brown Jura occurs. The soils are described as warm, shallow and strongly skeletal Brown Jura soils; in the upper areas they also contain erosion debris from the Upper Jura.
Grape varieties and cultivation
Silvaner accounts for more than 25 per cent of the vineyard area. Other documented grape varieties are Spätburgunder, Kerner, Schwarzriesling and Müller-Thurgau. Rigolling and long-term cultivation have significantly altered the original soil structure, improved root penetration and increased the humus content by adding organic material.
